Questions answered

Carpet Fitting FAQs

The questions I get asked most on the phone, answered properly — costs, timings, preparation, underlay and what happens on fitting day.

Before you book

Most people want to know three things: what it will cost, how long it will take, and what they need to do beforehand. Fitting is priced on measured area — £60 minimum up to 15 sqm, then £4 per extra square metre — so you can work out a rough figure before I even visit, and the instant quote calculator will do it precisely.

Measuring and quoting are free, and you get the price before anything is booked. If you've already bought the carpet, that's fine — fit-only is welcome.

On fitting day

  • Clear ornaments, small furniture and anything breakable
  • Empty wardrobes and chests of drawers that need moving
  • Keep pets out of the room while tools and gripper are down
  • Doors may need easing where a thicker underlay is used
  • Old carpet and offcuts are taken away when we're done

Common questions

How much does carpet fitting cost?

Carpet fitting is a £60 minimum charge covering up to 15 square metres, then £4 per extra square metre. Sheet vinyl is £70 up to 15 sqm, then £4.50 per extra sqm. Door bars are £6 each, stair runners start from £100 and stair rods are £5 per rod.

How long does it take to fit a room?

A typical bedroom takes an hour to an hour and a half including uplift and gripper. Stairs and a landing usually take two to three hours depending on winders. A whole three-bed house is normally a full day.

Do I need to move the furniture?

Clear small items, ornaments and anything breakable, and empty wardrobes and drawers if they need moving. I'll help shift beds and sofas on the day — it's much quicker with a clear room.

Do you take the old carpet away?

Yes, uplift and disposal can be included — just mention it when you get your quote so it's priced in.

Can I supply my own carpet?

Absolutely. Fit-only work is a big part of what I do. Buy the carpet anywhere — online, warehouse, trade or a local shop — and I'll supply the gripper, underlay, door bars and labour.

Do I need new underlay and gripper?

New gripper, yes — old gripper is usually rusted or nail-tired and won't hold a stretch. Underlay is nearly always worth renewing too; it's the cheapest way to make a carpet feel better and last longer. 11mm high density is £60 per bag.

Do you ply the floor first?

No, I don't ply sub-floors. Timber and concrete floors are prepared, swept and made good as needed before fitting, but plyboarding isn't a service I offer.

How far do you travel?

I'm based in Darlington and cover County Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire — Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Durham, Stockton, Middlesbrough, Yarm, Northallerton, Richmond and the towns and villages between.

How do I get a price?

Use the instant quote calculator for a figure in two minutes, then copy the quote and text it to 07379 638802 with the days that suit you. Or call and I'll come and measure for free.

Do you fit vinyl as well as carpet?

Carpet fitting is my main trade, and sheet vinyl for kitchens, bathrooms, utilities and hallways is also available.
