Stair runners fitted properly, step by step
A stair runner is one of the few flooring jobs where the fitting matters more than the carpet. If it isn't set out centrally and pulled tight into every crease, it will drift, wrinkle and wear unevenly within months. I set out every runner from the centre line of the staircase, fit gripper to each tread and riser, and dress the runner into the crease so it stays put for years.
I fit runners on standard straight flights, staircases with winders and kite steps, and curved or bullnose bottom steps. Where a staircase has a half-landing, the runner is cut and joined so the pile direction stays consistent from top to bottom.

Whipped or bound edges — what to order
Runners need a finished edge. Whipping is a wool yarn stitched round the edge and gives a traditional, soft look; binding is a fabric tape (often cotton or faux leather) and gives a crisper, more modern line. Most suppliers will whip or bind a cut length of carpet for you, so you can turn almost any carpet into a runner in whatever width suits your staircase.
As a rule, leave 5–10cm of timber showing each side of the runner. On a standard UK staircase that usually means a runner around 65–70cm wide.

Common questions
How much does it cost to fit a stair runner?
Stair runner fitting starts from £100 for a standard straight staircase. Winders, bullnose steps and half-landings take longer, so the price rises with the amount of shaping needed. Stair rod installation is £5 per rod on top.
Do I need stair rods with a runner?
No — rods are decorative on a properly fitted runner. The runner is held with gripper and tacked into the crease of each step, so rods are purely for looks. If you want them, I'll fit them at £5 per rod.
Can you fit a runner I've bought myself?
Yes. Fit-only work is welcome. Order the runner (with the edges already whipped or bound) and I'll fit it. Just make sure it's long enough — allow roughly 50cm per straight step plus extra for winders.
Will a runner work on my open-tread or curved stairs?
Usually, yes. Open treads, curved bullnose bottom steps and winding staircases all take runners, but each needs careful setting out so the runner stays central the whole way up. Send me a photo of your stairs and I'll tell you straight away.
