Getting the order right first time
- Ask the developer for a floor plan, but always have the rooms measured — plans and reality differ.
- Keep the pile direction running the same way through the landing and down the stairs.
- Spend on underlay: 11mm high density (£60 per bag) makes a mid-range carpet feel far better on a new chipboard floor.
- Choose a twist pile for the stairs and landing — it hides marks and wears evenly.
- Keep an offcut in the loft for repairs later.

Common questions
Should I get carpet fitted before I move in?
Yes, if you can. An empty house is far quicker to fit, there's no furniture to move, and you move straight onto finished floors. Most new build handovers give you a few days' window — book the fitting as soon as you have a completion date.
Can you fit before the developer's snagging is done?
It's better to wait until decorating and any snagging that involves the floors is finished. Skirting, doors and radiators being touched after the carpet goes down risks damage to a brand new floor.
Do new builds need anything different?
New builds are usually chipboard or screed and very clean, which makes for a straightforward fit. Screed can still be releasing moisture in the first months, so it needs checking before anything is laid. I don't ply sub-floors.
How much is a whole house?
